piston replacement in 4.0i inline 6

I have a 1993 falcon station wagon that is stock at the moment, needs a bit of engine work and I thought about replacing the pistons while I have the engine apart. One of my mates has some race pistons out of a holden 308, but only has 7 so I think I can get them cheep. my question is will 40thou oversize pistons out of a 308 fit into a 4.0i inline 6 motor? the pistons have only done 5,000 km

Does a round plug fit into a square hole?

For the amount of machine work it'd take to make them fit, it'd be A LOT cheaper and easier to buy a new set of 4.0L pistons. The 308 pistons would have a different bore size, gudgeon pin, rod size, compression height etc. Just not worth the effort.

Re: piston replacement in 4.0i inline 6

308 runs a 4.0" bore, 4.0 runs a 92mm bore iirc. SO unless u can bore out 9.6mm or 377thou, you dont have a chance in hell

Re: piston replacement in 4.0i inline 6

who said boring out the engine 377 thou. How about taking the piston and rings down 377thou. Or even boring out 188 thou and taking 188 thou off pistons and rings, or maybe just cutting the piston in half, taking out about 3mm then welding them back together. Yes, I think it can be done and definately should work out cheaper. Just buy them and work the technicalities of it out later?????????????
