My car is a 1984 ZK Fairlane (Full electrics, 3speed, EFI Option!)
Now the car seems to be wierd when starting, it sometimes cranks over straight away other times sounds like its got a drained battery, also when you start it cold it most times kicks over fine. drive for a while then try to start it and it is like the battery is drained?? im thinking its the starter motor (since ive got one here that i know is fine, ill put that on)
Main problem is this
Sometimes after u have been driving for a while, u turn it off, try to start it again and its like its got no FUEL? just cranks over like its trying to start but cant?
Then if you manage to get it started it just stalls like 5mins later or like tonight it stalled while driving then suddely like 2sec later starts again and continues?? then died at the lights, managed to get it started got to my mates place and it wont go at all just does the trying to start stuff
Now Im thinking the following wrong
1. The EFI RELAY on the suspension tower, when i wacked it a bit it sort of started then died? i cleaned the relay and connectors but made no diff. Isnt this a TFI kinda thing?
2. the high pressure Fuel pump?
Can anyone else tell me what it could be?? ive noticed that the Dash cluster is way out aswell especially with the Voltage reading it says 12v but the alternator is putting out 13.6 according to the multimeter

ok on these i think the starter is def ya prob, replce with black au2 one, thats ya starting prob fixed, make sure u have good body earths to battey and good earths from battery to engine, also make sure main power cablie is thick. THese cars are real sensiteve to bad earths and bad spelling which i just wrote and carnt be bothered deleting as its 11 20.... id change any relay u think is causing u greif, most like will be the efi fuel pump realy

The brushes in the starter may be worn but the TE Corty used to heat the solenoid so we would get the hammer out and tap it. I also used a water bottle and squirted it to cool it down. I agree and use the late model EB-AU small Bosch starter. My earth lead from the engine to the chasis was like speaker wire so replace yours while ur there.
Yea im putting a EB starter here from my old EA. INjected, the Relay controls the Fuel pumps and most of the injection system according to the workshop manual.
XE's didnt have a TFI did they? I dont see one on the dizy and i know XF's did.

Just checked and Yes it did use the carby one. Atleast i dont have to worry about a TFI lol. Does anyone know of any Faults with this style of EFI? things i should look out for?
Also Being a XE style EFI, when you switch the car to ON, should the fuel pumps make a priming sound like in a EA ,etc?

yeh im pretty sure the pumps should make a noise, i had an xf efi sounds like a similar problem, i couldnt hear the pump so i cleaned up all the contacts, including the ones under the boot mat?
it was all good after that
Ok here is what i did today.
Replaced starter with a EA one (starts soo much better)
Replaced EFI Fuel Relay thing
Replaced screwy dash cluster
Now the car is Starting a whole lot better! cranks soo much easier. But the ****ing car still wont start! it turns over twice starts and dies like 1/2 a sec later like its got no fuel? I got a fuel pump from Pickapart out of another ZK that looks ok. Think i may have to fit it but anyone got any ideas what might cause it? anything else in the fuel system?
