Poo4r Economy

It has become recently apparent that mmy EB series 1 Fairmont has extremly poor fuel usage.

I have the long range tank (80 ltrs) and i get about 400km from that.
This compared to my old CFI 3spd EA with a 68ltr tank which got 350km.
further to this, the exhaust pipe couldnt get any blacker if i painted it.

Now im aware that it could quite a number of things, so im wondering if its worth me just getting things like MAP sensors, etc replaced, or should i just take it to a mechanic to get it tuned and the timing changed? It has brand new leads and plugs, and is run on PULP. Ive run injector clean thru it several times and have inspected the filter, both of which are fine. so what else other then a mechanic do you guys recommend?

Re: Poo4r Economy

The first question is whether the car is running cold. Does it get to normal operating temperature within a reasonable period of time?

Also check/replace 02 Sensor. Sounds like you are burning to much fuel - how did the old spark plugs look?

Re: Poo4r Economy

The temp guage says the car runs at normal temp after its warmed. I am using to much fuel for sure, but i believed the Map sensor was the O2 sensor.

Re: Poo4r Economy

Map sensor is behind the intake manifold on the fire wall, a small black box.
The Oxygen sensor is in the exaust manifold, you cant miss it.

For new ones from repco, $145 for MAP sensor and $99 for O2 sensor.

Re: Poo4r Economy

Ok guys, what i am indeed concerned about is, whether or not they are indeed the problems. WOuld you recommend i get it checked out first, or just start replacing components?

Re: Poo4r Economy

Get it checked out first, it doesn't cost a lot to get it checked but if you go replacing component's that are fine it will cost a lot.
