time for an oil change and i dont really know much about oils.

the car is unregd so im not taking it to a mechanic to do it

what weight and whatever the other dimension is should i use?

whats the best way to clean out an engine during oild change?
ive heard that you drain the old oil, fill the oil pan with diesel, let the car idle for 5 mins (not reving. it must stay idle!) put in some new oil (cheapy) let it idle for a few mins, drain that and then put in your oil of choice.
what do you think of this.

te engine has done 280,00 k's and hasnt really been looked after so i really should clean it.

Use an oil flush, they cost like $10. Also if the engines worn (like mine) use a thick oil. I used penrite 25w70 and it worked great in my XE, but its done almost 400k's

I've heard of the diesel flush but haven't the balls to try it - I'd rather someone else demonstrated it in THEIR engine first about 12 months before I'd try it.

With that mileage go for a slightly thicker oil like 82falcon said - keeps the pressure up & gets rid of little mechanical noises from wear.

i used to use HPR 30 in my xf, fantastic oil, keeps good oil pressure when hot.

in a older oil burner hpr50 may be better.

Funny this should crop up again - just changed to HPR40 today. It's not an oil burner but the pressure is dead steady now - hot & cold.

Not sure what you mean by "oil pan". You drain the oil sump by removing the plug at the bottom.

As yeah right said, let someone else do the diesel thing. Too scary for me.

You can use a Woolies oil and a good engine flush additive and drain that, or just put the engine flush in now and then drain it. You must use a new oil filter before using the flush to catch a lot of the crap, and then put another new one on when you put the good oil in. Don't forget to put the plug back in before refilling with oil.

On the oil to use, I agree with the others, a heavy Penrite oil will suit that motor.

And if its an auto, don't forget to check your auto fluid level.

im not a fan of the diesel flush

regular oil changes are the best way to keep the engine sludge free.

if i ever need to flush a engine with diesel i would run a cheap woolies oil thought it then change for a good quality oil shortly after to get the diesel out of all the oil passages, lifters.
