Resetting the computer?

I've been told that you have to rest the computer when you fit new headers, something about disconnecting the battery is this right?

Re: Resetting the computer?

Yes you should reset the ECU.

disconnect battery and leave it that way for 1/2 hour or so.

Another way that is supposed to work i only do as above is:
disconnect battery
turn ignition to on
pull the high beams on
put foot on brake pedal
reconnect battery

after doing either of the above car will have to re-learn, you need at least a 20min drive and as many conditions as possible, a/c on and off, up hill fast, slow, fast start, slow start, fast stop, slow stop, etc, etc.
After doing all that it takes about 2 weeks for the car to fully settle back to normal.

Re: Resetting the computer?

not exactely weird, it just has to learn what base normal is, so when you put the a/c on and you are stopped at the lights it doesnt stall, the fuel maps have to be re-learnt basically for your car/driving style, but a few wide open throttle take offs will help it tune (cant think of a better word) properly.

Re: Resetting the computer?

Yeah as i said, drive for at least 20 mins, and as many different conditions as you can think to create, and you will be fine, and full open throttle is so much fun

Re: Resetting the computer?

yes, pretty much any mod that effects, air intake, exhaust or general tuning as a rough rule.

Re: Resetting the computer?

The ECU doesn't actually need to be reset, they are learning ECU's, so will adapt to the conditions anyway.
Whilst it doesn't harm aything, it also doesn't achieve anything.

Rick.

Re: Resetting the computer?

Having my ecu reset just made the car a **** to drive for the next two weeks as the idle went funny and the the car stalled more often.

I've never reset the ecu in any car before this and I can say I've never had probs before.
