Rocker gear differences - EA/EB2/EF

Umm, basic summary, I occasionally get really bad lifter noise, and I am also getting a shocking rattle from the top of the engine, which I am 99% sure is coming from the rocker gear.
So, rather than trying to do individual lifters, I was going to just replace the whole rocker gear.
Can anyone recommend which direction to go in? I have an ef rocker cover in the shed which I can put on, and i was planning (as a first step) of going to an ef camshaft, but for the time being, keeping the standard ea head. I don't really want to pull the head off till I have to.
Is there in fact much difference between lift rates and such or is that mainly controlled by the cam?
I'm a little under water with this, as I don't know too much about cams and stuff.
Any help would be appreciated.

EA GL-Ghia pseudo operator
3.9 MPFI converted 4 speed
2.5 inch exhaust
NC Ghia interior (except rear trims)
Fairmont audio (with 4 speakers)
Cruise control
S-pac cluster with white dials
Trip computer and Fairmont interior lighting.
Half wired Ghia BCM.

in terms of ratios, all the EA-EL1 rockers are the same. the main difference between them is some EA's dont use washer spacers which can wear out the posts easily and also use the larger lifter. EB2 has the washer and larger lifter and also has a smaller hole in the top of the rocker compared to the EA. the EF (same as ED and EL1) has the washer and the smaller lifter which was built better and also a real small hole on the top of the rocker. so in short go the ED-EL1 rockers and while your there change the cam, id go the wade grind 1004 to suit your trans. EF wont have much advantage over your 3.9 one.
