Hi guys.

Just put a new clutch in an AU ute. Had to undo the starter motor bolts of course to remove the bell housing. While the lower bolt is not too bad to get to, the top one is a real pain. It was bad enough with the engine tilted backfor the clutch job, but how much harder is it with the engine in its normal position? How in the hell do you get a spanner or socket on the top bolt with both the starter itself and the coil packs in the way!

Same applies I think for most late model Falcons, including "E" series.

Any tips appreciated. Thanks!!

Firstly make sure the earth lead is off the battery.
You need a 13mm 1/4 drive sockest with about 200mm extension, stick the screw into the sockect and feed up into bolt hole from underneath the car, then tighten up with ratchet. Nothing else works.
PS try not to do it when the engine is hot.

Yes, I has the battery disconnected and I did in fact use a Kingcraft 3/8" drive with a 200mm odd length extension. Could have been 10mm longer, but I did get it. Just as well it's not an everyday job. Working from the bell housing side I was able to insert the bolt by hand and then get the socket in from the front and over it to run it in.
