the engine in my el ghia makes a strange noise when its revved past 2 and a half grand, its like a rattleing or grating noise, its real strange, anyone got any ideas on what it could be,

there doesnt seem to be a noise before 2 and a half and it seems to disapear after 3 grand....and i have no clue what it is

Sounds like your valve guides are worn out. Is it a gas motor?

naa its not gas, its the tickford six,

if the valve guides are worn then wouldnt the motor blow blue smoke? caus its nnot doing that...

Not neccesarily. If the stem seals were gone as well, then yes, you'd expect to see oil smoke when you stab it, particularly if it's been idling a while.
But it is possible for the valve guides to go without taking out the seals straight away.

The reason I asked if it was gas was because I don't usually see a lot of Falcon heads develop this problem, unless they're on gas. Oh well :)
To me, it sounds from your description like valve guides. That's all I can think of that produces those symptoms, anyway

is it a tinnie kinda vibrating sound? i had this in my mazda. your exhaust has loosened itself at the base of the manifold. although the bolts still may be tight i can move the exhaust a little and it hits the manifold outlet at the base causing the rattling noise. try move the exhaust by hand and see if that is it.

ok thanks for the replies guys,

davway: its not really tinny, its hard to explain, more like a scraping noise....almost sounds like the engine is struggling, and at times it will actually lose power under acceleration in this rev range, but not much

ill check the exhaust tomorrow, its also pretty hard to hear over the exhaust, but ill have another listen tomorrow and try to explain it a little better

mongrelEB: thanks for that, ill look into that, could it be lifter noise, caus one of my lifters is quite noisy through the whole rev range, but the strange struggling noise was there before the sticky lifter
