I have an original XT Fairmont with 221 c.i. 6. With the car idling in drive, the car surges back and forth. I thought it might be carby troubles so I put a kit through it but the same problem still occurs. Anyone come across this type of thing. It was mentioned to me by the people at Early Ford that it might have something to do with the vacuum pipe feeding into the carby? Any ideas.

You have an air leak somewhere.Check your intake manifold gaskets,pcv valve..or try checking the torque of your inlet manifold if it had them

If not an air leak, try taking the vacuum line off the dizzy( I think it's vacuum advance) and block it. If this stops it surging, maybe the vacuum advance unit on the dizzy is no good.

Easiest way I've found to check for vacuum leaks, is to buy a can of Diesel Start (Ether Spray). With the car idling, you just squirt a few sprays around the perimeter of the head/carby, and if there's a leak, the idle will speed up.
