Just bought an 89 EA 3.9EFI and runs great, uses no H2O but the temp gauge needle bounces up and down, only a few mm, as I am no tech head, can anyone help with diagnosis and solution, annoys the crap out of me
mine does it too in the XF. i think its the thermosat which is the cause. if im right you can drill a 3mm hole through it and that will stop it doing it.

My educated guess is to replace the brass sender unit that screws into the block. If the thermostat was at fault it would get either too hot or not heat up properley (another common problem with the E series)-hope that helps
Before you go Drilling holes and teh like, check the back of the Temp gauge itself.
I had the same problem for years, i finally got the S&%t's with it, pulled the cluster apart and all it was , was the nut that holds the gauge on was loose.
Tightened it up havnt had a problem since.
