Thermostat

How much should a thermo stat open when in boiling water? I have it in a pot of boiling water at the moment to check to see if it is opening. It opens roughly 0.5cm. The reason why im asking is because the car heats up if it stays at idle too long, but when driving it drops back to normal operating temperature and i think the T/S is stuffed. Its for an EL xr6 BTW. Need to know ASAP :)

Re: Thermostat

5mm sounds about right.
If it's heating up when standing, but cooling down when moving, sounds like the thermo fans aren't coming on.

Re: Thermostat

Nah the thermos go ballistic. Ive figured out its the water pump. Under load it works fine, there must be a corroded part in it and the flow pulls up quickly when the car is at idle. Ill take it out and have a look sometime, grrrrrrrrrr

Re: Thermostat

the fans go of like crazy because they are 2 speed fans, controlled by relays, Check they are working on low speed, sohould come on around quarter temp, then hi speed will work if you turn the air con on.....
Very unlukely its the water pump, these are sound units, and only play up with external leaks...

If the fans arnt working on low speed, the temp will go right up, then the fans will kick in on hi speed to drop it down, it results in a very unstable temp guage
