I finally traced the damn ticking noise coming from under my EA II's rocker cover today. the timing chain plastic chain guide (on the intake manifold side) appears chewed and has a bit of play in it. checking the noise location with a stethoscope confirmed that the noise is coming from this location. I know that replacing the timing chain and the guide would fix this, but is there an easier fix? Is this a common problem? the ticking noise only starts after about 4 minutes from a cold start. the ticking is driving me nuts! would re-tensioning the timing chain help? im not sure and its a bit of work to do it...

what do you mean it has play in it? side to side or back and forth?
The chain has to come off to replace that particular guide, might as well do the whole shebang while you are there

u sure its not a lifter/tappet?

wicked - positive its not the tappets.

Does anyone know if the hydrolic chain tensioner oil filter being blocked could effect the timing chain tension and cause this?

i thought the tensioner was spring operated?

That guide shouldnt have any movement in it at all, try tightening up that bolt, if that doesnt work id say its broken/worn

The I6 tensioner is hydraulic - it's got a spring but that's really only to maintain some tension until oil pressure builds.
