Is there an easy way to turn the engine over by hand? I use a socket spanner on the engine pulley nut and perhaps a ratchet one with a long handle would be better. Using the starter is too difficult for me to control. With the plugs removed, would it be OK to use the steering pulley belt?

Yep. It will turn easily. I,ve found you can turn the engine a little by the belt with the plugs installed as well. although, once you hit a compression stroke it gets a little hard to turn.

pull the sparkplugs out, and use a 24mm socket on the crankshaft nose with a breaker bar / big ratchet
