Update - EA engine repair or replace.

Update..

I have had two quotes over the phone, on from a well known local establishment
who has the attitude "do everything just because it's better" the costs being
$2500 engine
$800 labour for 10 to 11 hours ( $72 per hour?)
$200 incidentals
Total $3500

The second from an establishment recomended by several in the taxi industry,
who suggests doing a "leak down" test on the rings rather than seperating the
engine just on spec. he also notes that replacing the timing cover with one from
an ED fixes the timing cover oil leak problem permantly.
Costs approx for bearing shells, new timing chain etc. rear seal and ancillarys
including labour as $2000

Anyone have thoughts on this ?

EA engine - repair or replace ?

Now the proud owner of an EA Fairmont Ghia (3.9 MPI 3 speed auto), a very well looked after two owner vehicle, recent updates include gas, full suspension
replacement (King springs, sensatrack shocks/struts, bushes, bearings etc.)
radiator, hoses, battery, front discs.

Excellent interior, all electrics work well, no rust anywhere, good paint,
(except bonnet) original mags and good tyres.

Done 257,000 kms, head done once.

With a slight timing chain rattle at start up. -

The Questions........

With cash really tight do I get a very basic recon. on the engine
(rings, bearings, head face, new timing chain, rear seal) ?
OR
Drop in a low mileage replacement from the wreakers? if so which model(s)
are a direct fit with minimum fuss and cost?
OR
Replace the existing engine with a short/long recon.?

Lastly..

Who does good work south of the city at reasonable rates ?

Who best to avoid (high cost and/or shoddy workmanship) ?

Consider I'm on a Carer pension with a disabled wife and three small
children, a bad job would see us stranded.

Thanks for any suggestions

Regards Prof. Rabbit
