Reason: fixed spelling...
It sounds like the oil pump has seized or the pick-up has become blocked, and the noises you're hearing probably mean an engine rebuild. Maybe get the car towed to your mechanic to check - but don't drive it anymore.
if its an ef falcon or au, they can sheer the role pin that goes through the gear that drives the oil pump ..... if the light was on for 5 km then u have done damage .....
As soon as the oil light comes on you should stop....
it may be a faulty switch but if u say it was grinding then you may have done some damage

WTF, why did you drive it with the OIL light on, i hope your into fishing as by the sound of it the motor is only good for an Anchor now
you should never run an engine with the oil light on, if for some reason the light comes on whilist driving shut the thing down IMMEDIATLY & then investigate to see what has gone wrong
no offence but do you know what the warning lights in the car are called

You may not have needed a new motor. If you just changed the oil (providing it was good oil) there should of been enough left on the journals to get u 5kms
The knock would of been the lifters running dry. And the grinding could of been your imagination.
Oh well. Better to be safe than spend a few hunge fixing the oil pump and the motor IS actually stuffed
