Re: visual differences between 3.9 and 4.0

pretty much the only thing.. is the rocker cover.. and the head.. THe head has 3.9 in the lh lower front of it..... Early 3.9's had 8mm headed intake manifold bolts instead of 10 mm head.. Other than that i carnt think of any real differnces... THe 3.9 will have a few more oil leaks than the 4.0 for some reason 2 :>:>

Re: visual differences between 3.9 and 4.0

thanks injected250 thats a start it does have a 4.0i head but still think it might have 3.9i block. recently sold my xg ute which had inlet, exaust and crow cam and bought a xe sedan with i6 which only has inlet and exaust mods but my thoughts is it should be same power to weight but xe got nothing on the ute, still goes well.worked all the gearing out yesterday its got a EA 5 speed (different ratios) which leans me toward a 3.9i

Re: visual differences between 3.9 and 4.0

The engine number will start with JG, and then a 2 digit number to identify the model, same as the VIN or chassis number. The 2 letters after this number identify the month and year of vehicle production. Post the engine number and I'll give you the date.

The engineering or casting number start with something like 87DA or 91DA, but is not a true reflection on the year of the vehicle.

that makes it a nov 93 ED, so you would have to say its a 4.0
