I have the external bosch regulator in my XY 250, was curious if there were any way to find out which of the two wire attachments on the underside is the 'field wire'?

Try this mate. I've looked up an old car manual that has a reference to the external "tin can" Bosch regulator. There should be two terminals on the underside of the reg in a "T" formation. (There may be a third terminal alongside too, but ignore that). The field terminal is the one that is the vertical part of the letter T. (this bit l, not - bit). According to my picture, it is the one that is parallel with the short side of the metal case, and it may be marked "DF" somewhere.

See how you go! And if you are setting voltages etc., make sure you take readings after adjustments with the lid ON. The presence of the cover affects the magnetic circuits and thus the settings.
