About the plugs coming out black... My car always does this (with each of the 3 different cams i've owned) when the car is left to idle for too long, or when the car is left to idle when it's cold, or if the car is stopped and started a lot, or if the car has stalled a couple of times.
Basically, there are 2 things that cause it:
1 - At idle the plugs get fouled up with carbon because it is running so rich. This problem is even worse when the car is cold. So leaving it idle for too long (especially when cold) causes it to foul up the plugs.
2 - When the car stalls or is switched off, a heap of unburnt fuel coats the plugs (much worse when it stalls). This basically has the effect of flooding the engine. When the car stalls it may flood immediately, however it takes a few times switching the car off (before it warms up properly) to have the same effect.
Why it stalled and why it's not pulling I don't know, but I'd say your plugs were fouled because it stalled, and the time before that, when you came back after an hour and it started was because it was no longer flooded.
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Dave
