My '88 XF EFI has a ticking sound coming from the engine. It doesn't do it at idle or anything over � throttle - only on light throttle. Do you guys think it's lifters? Normally noisy lifters are at idle too.

Possibly, depends where it's coming from. Have a listen and try to pinpoint where the problem is coming from exactly. Put your ear against the handle of a screwdriver and the other end against each of your injectors, you may have a noisy injector (completely normal with age, doesnt need replacing). Could be the fuel pump also.

Trouble is it doesn't do it at idle or revs except under light load - more load at the same RPM & it goes away. I forgot to mention - it's only when hot. I've tried to replicate the conditions without the car moving & can't - I need a rolling road!!! It's definately engine - not a bit of somethng on the tyre.

Injectors were fully serviced 3 months back so I've all but completely eliminated them - although the noise appears to be from the passengers side of the engine along with the lifters.

I certainly don't think it's terminal - just annoying.

And it can't be the fuel pump - it's a sedan & they're at the back in the tank.

man i got the same problem atm but mines not efi i,m suffering exactly the same symtoms

Then maybe it is just lifters after all though the symptoms are a bit wrong - like say normally they'd be hell noisy at idle.

What oil are you using? I'm on Penrite HPR50 (25W-70 I think it is)

i,m using penrite dunno what grade though would have to get out fo my chair to go have a look its the street machine style stuff though and mine was noisy at idle as well

Well - I have just solved this tick. Took all of 30 seconds once I had seen a post here in FordForums actually. The charcoal canister purge solenoid was just touching the wheel arch steel & when it operated it was causing the tick which was only there when under light throttle. I don't know the conditions for operation but I expect that it doesn't operate at idle but all the rest of the time and when the engine load increased the torquing of the engine on the mounts meant it moved just enough to no longer touch the wheel arch. So I rerouted the tube to the intake manifold putting the solenoid valve hanging well in the air & it's gone!!!

yeh but mines carby :( still havent sorted it out yet ive been to busy to worry about it car hasnt been driven for 2 weeks
