Hey Guys,

I just bought an 87 Fairmont Ghia last weekend, and have discovered a problem with the central locking.
Problem you ask, well it doesnt work!
My old man and I went through everything, all the controls appear to work, fuses are all ok, etc etc

We thought maybe it was this relay box in the passenger side door, it makes a clicking noise when you press the button, but still no action, we tried new relays...still no good.

So before I go shell out a few dollars (few? Oh auto-electricians dont know that word) I was wondering if anyone else has come across this problem, or perhaps some other avenue of help.

If its broke and you cant fix it replace it yourself. Its really not that hard. I just finished putting central locking in my car today. Cost me $45. My previous central locking thing got rained on and destroyed. Dont hide the control box in the kick panels.
If you do it urself make sure the lock knob can move around in its hole freely without setting off the locking mechanism before you put the door trims back on or it can get frustrating.

The xf ghia locking systems have to conrtol switchs atached to the door lock barrell one on each front door.These switch have a history of playing up and stop the system from working, they are held on by a clip. not sure if they are still avaible from ford.

i have central locking too......its me sitting in the middle of the bench seat in my pano!
lol....probably doesnt help any.

It will be the lock barrel switches that need replacing, they f*&k up buy not making sure the key slot is straight up and down, will most probably be the drivers side one so do that one first.

I've had the same problem in my '88 XF Ghia. It was actually flattening the battery if I didn't make sure the key was perfectly vertical when I removed it (not a daily driver) So I pulled the door switches off the barrels & put a jumper wire in each of the front door looms instead. Now I just use the door switch for the c/l.

I just fixed mine on the weekend. Turns out a wire on the front passenger cigarette lighter was off... consequently, the central locking didn't work.

Go figure!
