i have a standard XF Fairmont Ghia 86, and the problem i was having was the engine was running rough and i couldnt find any other problems, so i changed the injectors - and instead of the standard (Bosch 0280 150 726) i fitted Bosch 0280 155 710 (EV6?) injectors, and now the engins is much smoother when driving but when idling especially in neutral the engine "pulses" and the rev count goes up and down. I adjusted the air intake and the idle speed, but i have to put the idle speed up to about 1100 for it to run without "pulsing", and this isnt good when changing into drive or especially reverse - the loud clunking worries me. The good point is that i dont have to use the accelerator when driving constantly at 60kmh.
Also after driving, put it in park or neutral the rev count goes even higher than 1100
The engine has also lost power when accelerating, but i still got the old girl up to 180kmh on a long stretch of road

i have the same problem

i have an 87 xf fairmont ghia and it does it but it dosnt do it on start up but you drive for a bit and stop at a set of lights and it does it and it gets that bad that mine will stall.

i think it is the idle speed control valve and i have one here i just havnt had time to swap them and see if it makes a difference. i will have a go tomorrow and get back to you on how i do.

ok sounds good, let me know how it goes. You've tried adjusting your idle speed and air intake and it still does it??? What injectors do you have in???

even thought is for an ef the xf may be the same i will replace the isc and se how i go

There's really not much to go wrong with the ISCV - usually they just get gummed up & can't move fast enough to prevent stalling. They're just a solenoid operated restriction working on duty cycle so they're very simple. Check the resistance across the ISCV lead terminals while disconnected to make sure the windings aren't broken & I'll check mine & let you know what the resistance is to compare.

ISC wil be gummed up as they always get, give it a spray, and it'll be right.

well i fixed my problem
just reset the computer by taking off battery leads for 5 mins and reconnecting - then adjusting idle speed and air
