xf starting probs

Hi,i have an 86 xf ute i've only had it about 2 months, for the first couple of weeks it ran without a problem.
then one morning i drove it to work(no problems)got in it to go home at lunch time drove out the gate got 100meters up the road and then it died(it was pissing rain all day on this particular day).it would turn over no worries and when the starter motor was enguaged you could rev it,but as soon as you released the key it would die(ended up towing it home).(when we were trying to start it heaps ive times we ended up with a great backfire that blew the muffler to bits )
couldnt get it to run for a couple of days(tried heaps of different things)then it decided to start and has ran fine for a few weeks.then last wednesday it did the same again(again it was raining this day)today it started i took it for a run and it ran reasonably but backfired again while at high speed(90kmh).

so far i have changed ignition switch, put half a new exhaust on,checked fuel pump ,carby, new fuel filter.

the catalytic converter is still on the exaust ,could this be blocked and causing the problems or do you think its electrical??

any help suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: xf starting probs

Definitely look for an electrical problem.

You say you have already replaced the ignition switch, did you put in a new one or second hand?

From the symptons you are describing there is an electrical connection with high resistance between the 'on' position of the ign switch and the coil.

Not 100% sure if the ignition wiring runs through a circuit breaker / fuse on the model you have but would be a good place to start looking.

Is the car on LPG?
If so it could be the safety switch giving you the grief.

as far as i can find out 2 owners ago had lpg on the ute the motor packed it in and they got rid of the gas and whacked a reco motor in it.

the thing that has me so puzzled about it all is that it has only played up on rainy days(this might be coincidence)and first thing in the mornings on both days it started fine and got me to work.

yesterday i replaced dizzy cap and all spark plugs and leeds, took it for a drive for about 30 mins and it didn't miss a beat.
