XF temp sender

Hi all,

What temp scale is on an XF non S pack temp gauge, ie how many degrees C per notch? How do I test for a dud temp gauge? Measuring resistance at certain temps? Where is the temp sender for said gauge in XF's?

The temp sender should be at the front of the motor near the thermostat housing from memory.

It measures between 40-120C has a resistance of about 287 to 23 ohms C to H

Could the temperature gauge get input from the coolant temp sensor that the EST unit uses???

Cause on my XF, near the thermostat, there are a few vacuum dealies, with no wiring at all. How big is the sender?

Not likely

EST?..wasnt that a feature on VH/VK Commodores?

The sender is a little gold thing with one wire going to it that is screwed into the water inlet coming from the radiator. It will have a nut looking shape to it as u need about a 10mm spanner to get it out. It was that long ago since I had my 6cyl. The V8 went in real quick.

Ah I know the one. Tiny little thing. Yes the XF sixes (unleaded units) have a computer which controls spark and ignition timing above idle. Means no vacuum advance on dizzy. No more effin points.

Another question. If the coolant temp in the overflow bottle is 28 deg C (measured independantly) does it mean the thermostat is dead???

Read Thermostat

To test your thermostat...take it out when its cold..place it in a boiling pot of water...if it opens fully around 82C or 88 or 92 depending on which one u have then its fine...Otherwise buy a new one.
