I have a problem with my XH Longreach , outback ute. Every so often it wont start. That is, the starter motor won't turn over It's a 5 speed manual. Feels like trying to start an auto in drive. Usually if I wait a couple of minutes it starts. Doesn't seem to matter if it's hot or cold
is the smartlock light still flashing when try and start it? are u getting any click at all under the bonnet? have u checked the wire at the starter motor is getting power on cranking? same at the relay?
shouldnt be too difficult to diagnose.

Have had a lot of smartlock problems coming into the workshop lately. With the ignition key held in the crank position, smack the dash below the handbrake lever ( I think XH's still have the umbrella type) and if it cranks you have a smartlock module problem. All the cars that I have found like this dont log a fault code in the smartlock system and the light behaves as tho' everything is ok.
Not sure if the modules are still available new, I have been fitting remanufactured units sourced from Petroject in Adelaide.

Wouldn't have believed it until I tried it, but yes the "smack" on the dash near the handbrake did the trick. I've found now that just letting the hand brake "snap" home whilst holding the key in the start position does the trick.
Is it the "Body Electronic Module", that is located down on the r/h side sort of below the fuses and near where the throttle cable goes through the dash, that I have to replace. That's all it seems to show in my workshop book..Thanks for your help.
Yep, the BEM is the one. Not quite sure where Ford shoved em on the XH, but on the EB and ED's they are lhs of steering column. When ordering a new one be sure to tell em exactly what model you have and also the original BEM colour.
You will have to download the codes from the ignition barrell to the new BEM also. Turn the ignition to the "on" position for 30mins. During this time the smartlock light will flash fast, when it goes out you can start the car. You will also have to teach the BEM your remote keypads if you have any. Let me know if you need to know how to do this (can be tricky if you don't have a rear demister as not all utes had them).

Thanks.. No, don't have rear demister or central locking, so I suppose will just have to do the 30 minute thing. Can you advise of contact where I can buy a new , or, recon unit. It's black from what I can see, but will take it out and get all numbers. I had a look on the Petroject website and contacted the Perth agent but he didn't seem to clued up.
Just checked, it was Petro-ject in Adelaide. Seems they have actually run out of units now, but are happy to fix one if you send it to them. Best way would be to buy one from the wreckers (check the colour!) and send it to them to be checked/repaired.
