I currently own a EBII and later in the year am looking at building up a custom car, my way. I have been on ebay a few times and seen XR6-T half cuts for approx 6-7k, inlcuding gear box...My question what kind of old skool car i.e. Mustang 65' etc could i put the engine in and would it be street legal....I have a budget of 20k so i dont want a old skool car thats good and proper, as i said i want to build it up my style....
nearly anything can be made to be legal these days (within reason...)
Put it in a FORD that u like! what do you want? handling, safety, braking.etc -then go later model as it will be cheaper to get them all and to modify for more too.
Generally the older the car the more money you could spend as in rust, wear and tear, upgrading of components and so forth
IMO a mustang would be too left of center for an aussie built 6cyl, mustangs really deserve a v8. Put it in a falcon, mmmm an XP coupe would be nice........or an XF...
At the present time im doing some research myself on this conversion.
engine with turbo and required accessories $6000
aftermarket ecu $1250 - $2000
hoses and adaptors ect.allow $500
Those figures are for my 98 Au fairmont so im still looking around and instead of seeing those holdens with those bulges my car will have one if all goes well.
I assume you want something that goes pretty well, not just a cruiser? If so, I've always been a fan of the small car big engine philosophy. Putting a 400hp Windsor in a Cortina feels a hell of a lot quicker than a Fairlane. Having said that, this sort of thing usually comes at a cost, handling. Your plan on the other hand is the best of both worlds. If you wanted to go down this path the hardest part would be finding a small Ford that the long six would fit into ( Cortina aside, there are heaps of turbo six Cortys, not BA though). Any ideas on smaller, rear drive Fords guys? All I can think of is Cortina and Capri.
how about a mid mounted ba xr6 turbo in a ford escort :>:> i dont thint that would be legal... I would think a ford capri they have a massive engine bay

Does it have to be a ford? If not, maybe something like a datto 240Z might fit the bill. Shouldn't be too pricey and they were designed for a straight six. Or maybe try to hunt down a Prince Skyline GT. That would certainly be different.
Actually there's lots of jap stuff that could take a straight six. Think 80s zeds and supra/soarer. Or whack the ford mill into a torana/ charger. That would cause a stir
If it has to be a ford, I'd recommend the XP coupe/ute approach. A 65 mustang would be nice, but I think just getting hold of one in decent nick would blow your $20k budget
XF6t haha or imagine that power in a 1000kg capri...
I'm hanging out for someone to do something with that engine!! Hopefully with xr6ts being so popular the engines will become more available and cheaper! :)
