'77 LTD, 351 M:

In the process of changing my valve seals and rear main oil seal. Both without removing the engine, which I don't have the equipment for.

I've heard stringing a length of soft, cotton clothesline through the sparkplug holes and rotating to TDC for each respective cylinder in the firing order as an alternative to compressed air. How effective is this at keeping the valves from dropping? Anything I should watch out for / beware of?

I start at #1 tdc and rotate 45 degrees for each down the line, correct?

dont risk it!! just use a compressor to pump the cylinder with air

I'd hire a compressor. Maniac's right don't risk it. The pain isn't worth it. With a compressor you'd do it in a day easy.

Couldn't say in the US as I am in Australia. Here most decent tool shops hire them and other other equipement you might need. So I guess a local tool shop would be a good start?

Wrong.
Rotate 90 degrees for each cylinder. In other words, two full revolutions are required to do all 8 cylinders
