After getting the bushes replaced in my Ford starter, it now fails to engage. It throws the pinion forward but just makes a 'tink' sound then the starter free-revs.

I tried moving the engine (5000ks since new) around a few degrees to pickup unworn ring-gear teeth,..but still nogo.

Are these starters prone to any problems?The pinion looked OK with good lead-in chamfering on the teeth.

If it's not a clapper starter? Replace the solenoid. The solenoid is what makes the pinion throw out.

Yes I believe its called a clapper. I'll have to pull it off and have a look at the solenoid.

On a clapper setup the soleniod is completely separate from the starter iteself. It'll either be mounted on the firewall or inner guard.

Any auto elec sells a h/duty solenoid to suit.

The starter was found to have lost its contact which is operated by the 'clapper' armature. As a result, the contact continued to work but poorly as tension was reduced and only the copper was touching together and burning. This caused the pinion to not throw forward as positively as it should, causing damage to the lead-in teeth area on the pinion.

The contact set is rivetted and welded to the coil (one of the field windings)lead, so a stainless steel round-head bolt and nut (about 1/8") was used. The starter worked again after replacing the drive-pinion and clutch assembly ($65,..ouch!).
