Hey guys im new to this board and new to the older cars in general. Ive always loved working on cars and recently picked up my own project car, my first, a 1977 Ranchero GT.
It runs pretty good, needs a bit of work, but the biggest problem that i am having with it is as follows:
It starts fine when its cold, but if i've been driving it around for a bit, turn it off and go back to start it it just makes a high pitch whine. When i got a friend to turn it for me and I watched, the pulleys moved a little but the whining sound seemed to come from inside the engine....
Sounds like starter motor not engaging properly. I guess being a GT it's a V8 (Cleveland?). It's a fairly common fault with them.
All electrical connections to battery and starter (all the heavy leads at least) need to be clean, starter motor may need overhaul.
Let us know how it goes.

Thanks Jock, yes its a v8 Cleveland.
ill go out tommorow and try and clean out all the leads, im just going to sand em down if they look corroded and then put them all back together.. if its not that id assume its the starter?
Sounds like the usual "hot start" problem. Get rid of the old starter and buy a new Hi-Torque ,gear reduction unit....You will never look back. These babies are worth the money.

any ideas guys? Thanks Alot!
Yep, that's the starter. Mine sometimes does the exact same thing, although it's intermittent at the moment. Fitting a new starter motor in a couple of weeks which should remedy the problem.
so you guys are 100% sure its the starter? my old man will be payin the parts bill on this transaction, so any company or type to recommend that will also be a decent price?
you guys ****ing rule btw (sorry if im not allowed to curse) this site is my personal saviour!!
you might want to replace all cables and connections. Ford is known for doing things on the cheap. As mentioned above, when you go for a hot start, the amperage is too much and therefore, the engine will not turn over.
However, I think your problem is very much a rooted starter/solenoid etc. Therefore, buy a new starter.
