Those 400ci engines that were in LTD's from 72-78 (i think), were they modified clevo's? i seem to recall hearing that they were. If so does anyone know much about them? or what can be done with them? they should fit into the bay of an XA without shaving a bit off the suspension towers right???
Yeah, in stock trim the 400ci was a tetuned, low compression truck motor. Give it a massage like any other clevo, and it would be a great performance motor as you would expect with extra cubes and the general clevo heads etc. Take a look at the dood Shazzam. He built a tidy tall deck clevo.
Dont call the 400 a "Cleveland", a "400C" or a "400M", unless you want to get Davis all excited.
The fact is that the 400 looks like Cleveland, but has a taller deck to allow for the 4 inch throw of the crank, just like the 351W has a taller deck when compared to the 302W, to allow for it's 3.5 inch throw.
Every part from a 351/302 Cleveland will go into a 400, except the intake and pushrods. Obviously they also have their own 4 inch crank (with big 351W sized mains) and their own piston/rod combo. Nearly all 400's were tooled to fit the C6.

In fact the only thing that will fit from a 351C to a 400C is the water pump and heads i think!

You're thinking of the American LTD's that have the 400's and they would fit in the XA no probs but about 1/2 an inch closer each side to the shock towers than the 351 Clevo. Finding the right engine mounts is a pain in the arse, you can't use the same ones from the Clevelands.
You can also use an FMX trans providing you can find the bellhousing that is for big block bolt pattern. You have to order one from the US though.
i wpould say forget about it and go the 351 clevo if you want the cubes stroke it, the 400 was never really a good thing and its taller deck makes a inlet swap hassle. yes you can wake them up, but the little differences outweigh the cost of a good 351. it really depends what you are going to do with it. and it sounds like you already have it. a good way of picking one is around the front of the valley it has a raised section of casting in the block

The following items will fit both 351C and 400 . . .
• sump
• heads (including Aussie 302 CC)
• exhaust manifolds (obviously, because they bolt up to the heads)
• intake manifolds (when used with over-the-counter spacers)
• oil pump and drive shaft
• fuel pump
• water pump
• timing chain or gear drive
• camshaft and lifters
• distributor
• core plugs
• thermostat and housing
• spark plugs and leads
• oh, and the radiator (ha!)
• pistons, the 351C and 400 pistons have the same compression height (dimension from wrist pin to top of piston), but the M-block wrist pin is slightly larger than the 351C wrist pin. #

a 400m is a 400 ci cleveland block only with a .500 inch taller deck( making it taller and wider than a 351 cleveland.
