You're both kinda right.
The 90 degrees actually refers to the angle between the two banks of cylinders.
Coincidentally, in a 90 degree V8, the engine does fire every 90 degrees of crank rotation.
However in a 70 degree V8, the engine would not fire every 70 degrees of rotation.
If you made a 120 degree V6, it would fire every 120 degrees of crank rotation and the same principal applies for a 180 degree V4 (Volkswagen) or a 60 degree V12.
But the degrees as quoted actually refers to the angle of cylinder banks to each other.
Understand?
Being a four stroke engine, it takes 720 degrees of crank rotation to fire all cylinders. 720 degrees divided by 8 cylinders is 90 degrees between power strokes.
It's the main reason that 72 degree V10's are the go in Formula 1.
