which combo for me?

hey guys,
having recently owned a vu and a vy ss ute, may i say that i am now the proud owner of an XE/351 ute(black block, demon 750, pacemaker 4-2-1, C10, 3500 hi-stall, 9in lsd, mandrel bent), and holden know what they can do with their overpriced heap's of ....

Looking toward an engine rebuild, i have recently aquired a 4MAb crank which will be sent away for heavy treatment, and an erson solid cam;

Specs are;
.650 Lift, 312 Duration and 285@ .50 On Intake
.655 Lift, 328 Duration and 296@ .50 On Exhaust
&matching lifters.

rods will be billet race numbers and pistons most likely ross race flat tops.
i intend on purchasing CHI 218cc's, an applicable manifold and keep with the demon.

I would like to acheive 250+ rwkw and to rev to 7000-7500(if possible) and i plan to add a 4-link suspension(mcdonald bros.), to help keep the ute on the road.

Could anyone pls offer advice on the likes of roller rockers, and other odds and ends to make a solid street/strip combo as this is my first build and i have no idea whatsoever.
regards,
ace

With that cam spec you will need much higher stall speed and 4.11+ gears
Would not be a well behaved daily driver thats for sure!
I'd go more like 250 dur @ .050

Re: which combo for me?

You'll go more like 300rwkw+ with that setup. I'm nearly @ 300rwkw now and my setups nowhere near as severe. I just picked my new ignition system (addon) from the post office and are expecting my 218cc CHI heads back this week hopefully John says. I've got mine strangled to the hilt to stop excessive noise too. I'm expecting 300rwkw on the next dyno

You'll need a minimum of 4.56 or 4.8's with that cam. Unfortunately it'lll need at least a 5000-5500rpm convertor. That durations huge.

Re: which combo for me?

Do you want something you can drive on the street OR are you trying to win the National Drag Racing Championship with this thing

Tone it down a bit in the cam dept or it will be a real pig of a thing to drive anywhere except the strip

Re: which combo for me?

take some cam out first svo solid 248@50 606 gross lift or f246 or comp cam r294 i think if you go this way the rods will be overkill unless you want to gas the bottom end and thats another story diff cam and need lower comp to gas it, engine builder up my way got 485 at engine with a basic 351 2v with 238 solid svo cam and attention mostly to the heads and a parker funnelweb and 750 dp. all that power your engine will have with the combo you suggest is strip only and capri or chasied falc the way to go. just my 2 cents worth

Ace, just my 2 cents worth on roller rockers... try and get RR's with a retainer on the bearing... some rockers are all the hype...but small bearing and no retainer.. eg. Crane gold race...

I'm a big fan of the YT's

Oh, and you'll most likely need 3/8th 1pc moly pushrods + guideplates..

Re: which combo for me?

Forgive me for saying this ace but i think you summed it up when you saidthat you "have no idea whatsoever".
Do you realise how big this cam is? Sounds like its going to make peak power waaaay up there in the rev range.I would have thought it much more practical to match my camshaft to my heads rather than to have picked a cam from a catalogue.Keep in mind its intended usage.As suggested around 250 @ 50 is pretty stout and makes for a good street strip setup.CHI heads don,t require that much bias on the exhaust side either.A lot of cams from camshaft catalogues have been designed to suit 4v style head flow imbalances,IE they are significantly biased towards the exhaust side.$v heads flow poorly on the exhaust side in relation to the intake hence the emphasis on longer duration and increased lifts on the exhaust side.CHI heads have designed a head to flow much better on the exhaust side so the reality is these cams have no place in an engine designed with these heads.
ZSome good suggestions have already been made.Personally ,i think you may have approached your first engine incorrectly.Make informed decisions about each component you purchase and if you,re not sure which way to go then ask.You,ll save a lot of money that way.After all the advice is free.
