External difference between 302 and 351

Is there any way to tell a 302C from a 351C without pulling it apart?

Re: External difference between 302 and 351

If the engine is in original condition the valve covers were painted red on the 302C.

In the corner of the heads where you usually find a "4" or other identifying mark the 302C heads will have nothing at all.

Also, notice in the picture below the two casting "lugs" in the bottom edge of the head where the cylinder head meets the block that are circled in red. Only the 302C heads have this. If your heads have them and they are original to the engine then you have a 302C.

Earlier model 302 heads have that feature but i have a set of E casting heads (80,s) which don,t have that feature.

pull a plug and measure the stroke, use the dipstick as your measuring tool, that or an unfolded coathanger.
