Hi Guys,

I know there are storys/theories etc. regards to the actual strength of a Cleveland crankshaft.

I'd like to hear of any Cleveland crankshaft failures as i personally haven't heard of one breaking (not that im suggesting it can't be done).

a) What year?
b) What failed?
c) What kind of HP/TQ was being generated
d) How was it prepared?

Only ever heard of one guy who's broken a clevo crank. Broke it at Bathurst in 1979 in an XD Flcon. I've seen the results, wasn't pretty. Carrillo rods and crank were toast. Apart from that I've seen Clevo cranks withstand over 600 total HP with Nitrous without a drama. Although rods are another story!

Yes, for a long time I hadn't heard of a crank breaking, but around 2 years ago a bloke broke a crank at the first journal.

Wasn't anything crazy of a motor. Near stock actually. The balancer just flopped around when cranking, looked pretty weird.

Diagnosis was hard but they eventually assumed over-revving when cold?

My crank twisted, but didn't break, the engine had 227rwkw plus 150hp n2o, the previous owner was not retarding the timing when using the n2o which i believe was the main factor.

my dad broke his in about 5 or 6 places. it was a n/a 360ci clevo fuel injected twin t/b's and making 750hp. it only happend because the would usaly use a steal harlmoic balancer but he changed it to a alloy one and it unbalenced the cranck and broke every thing. also at the time he had it reving to 9900rpm!!

Yep the first motor i bulit for my Cortina snaped the front of the crank of and then snaped in the main thrust area, it was puting out about 650-700 hp. It my have been the 250 hp no2 kit that might have done it?
