How do you arive at the magical number of 286 rear wheel horsepower (220rwkw)?
That's about 360hp or 275kw at the flywheel, or 1.2hp per cubic inch.
Have a lazy $10k to spend?
As mentioned above, rebuild the engine as a 351, keeping the 302 block to maintain matching numbers. You'd be back near 1hp per cubic inch; a much more achievable figure within a budget.
Have'nt you ever seen the Movie 'Mad Max' , Where the Mechanic say's "Speed's just a question of Money , How fast do you want to go ???". But seriously , if you want to spend some Money , a good start is Solid Lifters , Extractors and good Mufflers etc..., 351 crank and rods inside your 302 block . As the block and pistons are the same , Your Block No. will still read as 302 to RTA and Cops etc... . However , use Open Chamber 351 Heads and fit single Groove 4V Valves, 302 Heads [High Comp] will make your engine ping on regular pump petrol . Also , with significant power increases you must strengthen your Engines 'bottom end' , and Modify Driveline to suit to take maximum advantage of Modifications. Try to balance it all out to your driving capabilities , Budget, and practical requirements of the intended vehicle.
The engine no's dont show wether it's a 302 or 351 on vic roads computer's anyways,I've asked them several times when changing eng no's, so just drop in 51 and work from there.

I thought they did , But if they don't .... even easier .
