How To Tell If Temp Sender Is Working

is there a way to test a temperature sender, cheers
gauge is working fine by earthing it out

If the gauge goes up when earthing it out the gauge is fine. If it does not do it when connected to the sender? Your sender is a) faulty or b) the wrong temp/resistance range.

You could measure the reistance with a multimeter.
