The 351 in my XE just stopped dead. I checked all the wires to the ignition and LPG switch, but still no spark. I had power at both sides of the coil and at the LPG switch, but nothing. I swapped the coil and the rotor and that made no difference.
The only thing left in the equation was the Bosch electronic distributor, that I had reconditioned and recurved over a year ago and has never missed a beat. I pulled it and swapped it for an old, dirty one I had in the shed. The 351 started first turn of the starter.
What could be wrong?
The only thing I can think of is the module hanging off the side.
If this is stuffed and needs replacing, can I do away with it altogether and replace it with an MSD, HyFire or FireBall. I’ve always wanted a bigger spark for the slower burning gas.
This could be the excuse I need to get it now. I’m just not sure how these units work or connect, as I’m not electronically minded. Do I still use my standard coil?
Your XE one if factory will be the same. Yes, you still need a module. The box is just an add on component. If you do buy a box? Get the same branded recommended coil.
I am looking @ getting an MSD unit as my mates going overseas. I'll deposit the $ in his account and get him to send one back as gift No tax!
Purely because they are cheap in the US. The crane unit is dearer in the US for some reason I've found. I am looking at a 6AL and using it's rpm limiting features. Comes in handy when you need to drop the car off @ a workshop too. Stick a 4500rpm module in Keeps the car and engine semi safe.
