I've been using Redline 50W Racing in my ~350hp Cleveland powered road/race Falcon. But I've read on some website that using 50W oil is outdated thinking now and there are better multi-grade options.
Anyone got any recommendations?
Races are say 20mins, I don't rev past 6,000. Car is not a trailer queen, it does some road miles too.
Will be doing start-up on the new (rebuilt) engine this week so any input much appreciated!
Re: Oil Recommendations for Mild Racing Cleveland??
The 50w oil is probably a bit heavy especially since its a new build. I would stick with a racing oil though because they have better lubrication properties than the run of the mill motor oil. I run Valvoline racing 40w in my 460. An oil designed for diesels is also a good one because it has better lubrication properties, especially during break in. I would say Shell Rotella 15w/40. I'm not sold on synthetics for the engine yet. I'm sure they are good, but as much as I change my oil I wouldnt want to pay it. I do use Royal Purple in the tranny and gear boxes though.

Re: Oil Recommendations for Mild Racing Cleveland??
HI MATE,,penrite hpr 30 is a good oil to run for the cam brake in preiod and for the run in period too,,it has a high zinc content for flat tappet cams,,
some people drag race with it too.
Im assuming your doing circuit sprints,,I have been using castrol R 10w60 in my 350-370 hp clevo for a couple of years running in circuit sprint races and using it on the road as well,,have had no dramas with it at all,,good oil pressure hot and cold.
Ive run at phillip island a few times too and i dont think i would have had oil pressure on some of those long corners because im just running a std high energy sump not a circuit sump,,but engine held up fine, so id say the oil was doing its job.
weve used it in a customers car that i built the engine for 5 years ago that races nearly every weekend and drives to and from the event so its a good all round oil i think.
10/60 is a good range for cold hot running but id change it after every 3
meetings.

Followed the engine builders advice and used Redline 50 Racing which is a 15w50.Red Line Oil: Motor Oil
Eight litres cost almost a couple of hundred bucks (kiwi). Yeah I drive my car to the circuit so it does some road miles too. The races are 6-8 laps, maybe 10-15mins. I started with a standard sump/pump but the surge issues are just massive - surprising you're not having dramas at Philip Island with your sump? You run a high volume oil pump? I have a custom fabbed race sump with gate baffles and so on.
Started my car with new engine and competition clutch today, drove it home (about 50km) - UNREAL. It now has a one piece drilled-out lightweight flywheel with Quartermaster triple plate - weighs two fifths of **** all. The way the engine revs when you blip the throttle now is just insane - just kind of goes WAP WAP WAP from idle to kinda four grand in a finger-snap. Bit harder to get off the line though, I got told don't ride the clutch or it roots it - just get the clutch out and get going.
Re: Oil Recommendations for Mild Racing Cleveland??
The oil additive package in "Racing" oil doesn't have the long life of normal oil, less than the normal oil change interval for street engines. Race engines have frequent oil changes so it is considered unnessesary.
