Depends what are you getting for that $1600? A 351 or 378? It sounds like a very basic kit that inc new pistons. A kit with a good set of pistons (not cast) inc machining would cost @ least $2000.
My short block kit is ready to be picked up from PAVTEC. I just have to get myself down to Melbourne. All up it has come up at just under $3000. It is basically the Gold kit with a few modifications.
The $1600 kit does not include a torque plate hone and has cast rings.

Well. I've wimped out. Going and looking at a trading post motor on te weekend, if it is up to scratch, off come the heads/intake/Holley600vacsec/C4 and on go CHI's/CHI intake/750DP/Toploader.... :D
