ok, dont laugh or anything like that, I'm semi-new to the world of auto's.

I have a 76' LTD Landau "project" car; and I've been doing little bits and pieces on it here and there replacement wise.

So, today I was bored and decided it was time to check the pcv valve,
whilist taking it off I noticed there was a bunch of oil around the cap that held it in place; taking the cap off (which has the valve in it) I can see black oily grime inside. Now, correct me if i'm wrong but isn't the purpose of the pcv valve to prevent this, while providing cleaner emissions?

Depending on the age of the motor it could be a bit of oil blow by which would be normal, Yes you are right that it should prevent this from happining but i would not worry to much.

motor's pretty old, just wanted to check my understanding :o

Gonna replace the valve anyways, ifI didn't know better it looks like the original :o
