is 20w-70 too thick for my 85000km 302c that has had an easy life. Would this oil thickness be the cause of the tapping sound?

dude try pentrie hpr 30 ok it is the best oil for ur xc i use it on mine all the time

Yep.

With that few miles, I would even try a 15w-40 and see how it goes. Does it use any oil? Don't use synthetic, waste of money if you do 5,000 k oil drains.

If the 15W-40 is a bit noisy, go up to a 20W-50, and drop it back to a 15W-40 in winter.

Penrite HPR 30 is still a 20w-60. That V8, with 85,000 k's, is only just run-in, and could take a thinner oil.

If it were mine, I would run a petrol rated diesel engine oil 15W-40. Get rid of the tick as well.

I used to run Penrite HPR 50 (70 Weight) in the Cleveland in my XB when it had very old and loose bearings.
