Strength of a 351 block?

Hi all
A mate of mine is giving me a 351C out of his ford torino. I am contemplating making a 393 stroker blown out of this for my supra. (am trying to be the quickest in aus at 9 sec 1/4)
Its a 2V motor he thinks. A torino would only be 2 bolt id guess?

Quenstion being - how strong are stock blocks? would i get away with a stud girdle to get me in the vicinity of 800hp or so? Or do i need to go all out and buy a dart block?

thanks again
Blake

Re: Strength of a 351 block?

if you prep the block i think 800hp is doable. but 800 is going to require some aluminum heads. HCI makes a set that seem to be popular , 2 barrel heads are known for more low end torque but have flow problems so not as much up top with aluminum you dont need to worry about that b/c they are built better.

If you can buy new block go for it. Aftermarket got to be better vs stock. We are running a 393 with chi heads 728 hp at 7300rpm by MME shop Mark only 11.45 compression on the motor. Running cleveland block now. Best time time to date 10.34 et 129 mph in 3420 lbs Mach 1. good luck
Jim

Good luck at getting a 393 steel stroker set up in Aust at the moment.
I am still waiting, so now opting for a 408 kit instead.

Re: Strength of a 351 block?

does a 408 put much more stress on the block though? I am looking at forced induction, so dont need the rpm and compression that jim above has...

Re: Strength of a 351 block?

Block needs sonic check and groutfill, even then i wouldn't bother with 800hp.

If it were me doing it: World/Dart/SVO 427 plus CI block and CHI heads.

One here aiming at 750hp:

Re: Strength of a 351 block?

does a stud girdle not give the 351 any extra strength?
