Is a strong petrol smell normal for a c351 with a holly 650 double pumper?

I just got an XA coupe and its bloody terrific! But im just curious about a petrol smell when it runs on petrol (its dual fuel). There is just a pretty prominant (not really REALLY strong) petrol smell that you can smell under the bonnet and it comes into the cabin while driving. Is this normal when using a larger carby like a 650 double pumper or do i have a problem?

Yeah, its sort of normal. I run a 750DP, but can mainly smell it after a drive when its parked in the driveway. If it is excessivly smelly, it could be its just too big for the motor. When my stall convertor was too small, and the motors rpm was pulled down too low, it would dump in some fuel, but not burn it correctly. Also make sure the floats arn't sticking or are too high.
Other than that, i can allways smell fuel around my old carbied clevo.

Depending On How Strong It Is, Sure You Can Smell Some But It Could Be Running Real Rich Or Maybe A Crack In One Of The Hoses. I Run A 750dp And Dont Really Have A Issue When Tuned Right

Leaky exhaust gaskits can cause fuel smells. Cehck all the holes in your fire wall are sealed. Fumes also come up through the shifter hole on the trans tunnel.

Recheck your idle mixture settings (ie: too rich). Are your exhaust fumes overly smelly?

How often is it run on gas? Being duel fuel i would say it's a carb gasket or a split accelerator pump rubber.

switchin from gas to petrol could cause that aslong as it (the smell) goes away. The normal practice is for the carbie to drain of petrol when switched over. So this could be cause by the pumpin of fuel to the tanks!, but if it is always there , yip there could be a cracked rubber somewhere, usually caused by dying. If you're not sure get it check out, small $ Vs no car!!!

Found out what it was...when we replaced the alternator this arvo we started it up and straight away saw fuel pissing out of the back of the carby all over the manifold...turns out it was just a loose screw which is on the needle or something like that...the one at the back of the carby...it was totally loose so we just tightened it and fixed it straight away!

Glad thats all it was!

Funny you should mention that. Last weekend my 351 started coughing & backfiring so i decided to lift the bonnet and investigate. To my horror i saw that the front acc pump on my 750 holley was squirting fuel all over the dizzy every time i hit the throttle, great . To make things worse i found that 3 of the 4 acc pump scews on the front bowl have been striped. Im thinking of using the bowl off a 350 holley but im not 100% sure if it will work?

Being dual fuel make sure the carb gsks have not dried out and leak , if so then kit it and run at least once a week on petrol .
