gday im just wondering what you guys reckon i should too get some more power out of my 302w in my XW.
its all stock and blows no smoke and i plan to take the motor out soon to fix up the engine bay and give the motor a new set of headgaskets and a coat of paint.
i am looki at proberly a mild cam ,edelbrock performer, 600 holley and maybe some head work depending of the cost of it,i got a mate at work that said he could get it done cheap by a mate of his?
im hoping on power figures around 250hp-300hp at the fly or enough to spin both back wheels :-)

at the moment its stock but i plan to go extractors and 2 1\2 maybe early next year

no chance you would get 250-300hp with a mild setup on a 302.....you would need to turf the stock heads and go aftermarket,run a decent cam,good ignition,manifold,carb, compression, etc,etc, will not be cheap too....

That sort of power is what the 200/220kw motor's in the XR8's put out, just base your 302 around them,or even better drop one in the engine bay,cheer's.

Have a look at what carol shelby did in 1965 with the GT350 mustang. It was a 289 windsor, and isn't that different to the 302. He got about 306hp.

in the workshop manuel 302w's had 220bhp:
Mustang 302 cubic inches (5L) V8
Bore and stroke: 4 x 3 inches
Power: 220bhp (164kW) at 4600rpm
Torque: 300lb-ft (407Nm) at 2600rpm
Pushrod overhead valve, 2 valves per cylinder
Fuel system: Two barrel carburettor
Compression ratio: 9.5:1

30-40hp wouldnt be that hard to gain would it??
i do plan to get extractor and exhaust ,but when the cash comes in.
im pulling the motor out so i thought it would be a good opportunity to do a cam change and maybe some small headwork.

Benefits of ULP converted engine is cheaper petrol (depending what compression ratio you run), and you don't have to rely on LRP/ upper cylinder lube.

I bought some ED XR8 heads for my 302 mustang. If you shop around you should be able to get them for around a couple of hundred dollars, they should flow a little better than 1970 vintage heads and handle ULP quite comfortably.

Buy the time you port the buggery out of your factory heads to get decent horse power you may as well buy some aftermarket heads

World products windsor jnr's(and decent) are cheap to buy with just a cleanup of ports and about 9.5comp,230 @.050 cam,rpm or rpm air gap manifold

Theres nothing wrong with the heads you have got if there still in good condition and valve guides are still good. They should be D0OE castings and have the same valve sizes as E7's 1.78 in 1.45 ex
Clean up the exhaust ports by removing thermator hump just inside port and smooth out the shortside radius on both ports and any other casting marks.
port match the inlet manifold and heads.
Get a 3 angle valve job
the only thing your really paying for is grinding the valve seats ,get this done after you clean up the ports so not to damage the valve seats the rest is just time consuming if you can get access to a die grinder.
These heads out flow e7's over .4 lift before you do any of the above mods
if you can get the machining done cheaply you could also throw some bigger valves in , upto 1.94in and 1.6ex and you will be getting some decent flow no.s

A cam with around 210-220 duration @0.050 and .5 lift would be good with a 600 cfm carb and dual plane manifold like a performer.
Save the money you would spend on after market heads and get a 3.25 diff and a 2000 stall convertor
