5.0 Timing Question

Is it possible to get more power from a 5.0 (EB Fairmont) by advancing the base timing and running higher octane fuel? If this is possible, what do you advance the timing to?

Thanks
Tris

Running Premium will allow you to bump the timing up 2 to 4 degrees, maybe more, and will give you a good power increase. Put it up 2 degrees at a time and wait till it pings under load, then back it off a couple of degrees.

When I got my timing set, they connected a set of headphones to the block and listened to pinging that way. It can ping without you hearing it in the car. Get someone to set it on a dyno. I am happy with the results.

They do feel more responsive with PULP and advanced timing.
To give a figure is difficult because each one will be slightly different because of age, carbon build up in the chambers, harmonic balancer shift, etc.
However 34 degrees is probably close, though you can do as one poster suggested and advance 2 degrees at a time and the moment you hear it pinging, retard it 2 degrees. It sounds rather hit & miss, but it works fine in practise.

Rick.

Thanks everyone, now I'll give it a go.

When you say PULP, are you talking 95 RON or 98 RON? Obviuosly more advance is possible with more octane. At 34 BTDC, are you running 95 or 98 RON?

Cheers
Tris

Perhaps you should retard that a bit. Pinging is BAD!
