87-93 302 engine question

Hello everyone. New here to this forum. I have a quick question that I've asked alot of people at the race track about and nobody has a good answer, so here goes! I've been tasked with developing a Factory Five and it has to maintain a stock 5.0 litre 302 that came only in the Mustang between 87 and 93. Suspension I know engines I don't. In those years did any of the motors have a better cam for horsepower, or any other stock gadgets that would give it an edge over other years? I'm scheduled for a leak down and dyno on the motor I currently have, but I know we are down on power compared to the other cars. From what I understand the best I can get is around 225 hp to the wheels. Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Lance,

The '93 Cobra has the highest power of all the engines from that era.
It has GT40 heads with larger valves 1.85/1.55, a free flowing Cobra inlet manifold, 24lb injectors,65mm t-body and a larger cam and 1.7:1 roller rockers. Otherwise the 5.0HO was fitted, the camshaft of which was the same from '97 to '93.
Are you allowed to fit the 1.7 rockers from the Cobra?

I actually just checked and it states" Cobra model engines and engine components are prohibited. " The factory spec says the engine will produce 225hp, but wouldn't that be an average?

I thought you might say that.
it's 225 SAE Net HP which is about 170 rwhp. Are you allowed to do anything internal to the engine at all? Are you allowed to rebuild it? Can you accidentally deck the block too much and get the piston out of the hole a bit more:) Can you accidentally offset grind the crank .015 or so?:)....some machine shops are awfully dodgy these days:) Can you do anything to the EFI components of the engine? Like adjustable fuel reg, Bored out MAF etc? What about headers etc?
