AU 5.0 windsor rebuild

ive got a AU xr8 short motor that has been rebored 0.20'' its got new 0.20'' over pistons but im having trouble finding rings.

ford dont make 20 thou over rings for any windsors after 12/1995 and i havnt been able to find any non-genuine for the later motor. my question is can i use the earlier EF rings with the AU piston? if not can we use EF pistons and rings in the block?

any help would be appreciated
im sure other people must have ran into this problem

Re: AU 5.0 windsor rebuild

From memory, there is no difference in the bottom ends from ef to au, the only diff is the heads, cam and intake.

Re: AU 5.0 windsor rebuild

pistons are genuine. funnily enough ford made piston 20thou over but not rings(at least not now)

i thought they were all the same too but
the pistons, rings crank etc are all different part numbers between early and late, changing during EF

I would not worry about that, as if you buy a door handle from an eb fairmont, it has a different part number from an eb falcon, just because they are off different models. Identical part, different part no.

Re: AU 5.0 windsor rebuild

yeah im a ford parts interpreter so i have seen that a few times but there is obvously a difference of some type hopefully they are interchangable though. although on the door handle the difference is in colour early ones are black, later ones are grey and later fairmont style are the same part number as the standered grey you just paint them to suit car colour if required.

You should be able to find a set of aftermarket ones, like speedpro etc that will fit, they come in nearly every size possible, just find out the thickness required.

The part numbers changed in the EF's because pre-EF V8's had forged TWR pistons, EF's onwards had Hyper's, but they are both interchangeable.

No actually only EB 1 had forged pistons. Some later engines may have got them but only by pure luck as forged piston engines got used up. '92 up 5.0 HO engines went with hyper pistons instead.
