I have peeled my engine down due to low oil px to replace all the bearings. In the process, I am measuring the cylinders etc. Mfr specs for this engine are 4.0002-4.0028. With max out of round .001 and wear limit of .005. I have about 5 cylinders at about 4.003 at the top. And One or two cylinder with .0018 out of round.

i'm not racing this thing, just doing a resto. Do I have to bore all cylinders? And to what dimension? hopefully I don't need new pistons.

You can pickup a complete short block quite cheap from the likes of eagle auto spares. I think they are around $1500-1800 assembled.

Thanks. I considered that option until I confirmed all my numbers match. i'm hoping to find out if the wear i have constitutes a boring job.

it would be best to get the block bored due to that sort of wear, early windsor have no problems in being bored out(plenty of meat in the block), late model windsors you have to be carefull(thin castings), they can be bored but have to be carefull not to go to far

Can it be bored without replacing the pistons ie .003, .010. or is the next step .030?

Honeing will bring some of those numbers back alittle but create slightly more clearance..It's also the clearance between piston and bore to check also..Like said some out of round can be cured by honeing..If you bore it, it will need new pistons.. Depends on how much money you want to spend..A .020 to .030 is generally ok..

Sounds like the best bet is to bore it out to the first oversize. You certainly had better luck than my dad, his 302 was already at 60 thou over and had cracks in the bores - not nice!

Brand new block with pistons, rods etc will prolly end up costing the same! New block as apposed to old one. Unless your going to balance everything i'd go the new unit. Less chance of reasembly only to decide you were better off with new stuff. Also you can sell the old block to make up the difference!! Let someone use it to make a stroker or boostable engine.

I think they even had long motors with gt40p's for around $2200. now thats a better way to go too!
