exracting power from efi 302

Hi guys i just bought a new car its a EL GLi 5.0l V8 and my problem is my 4.0l EB 5 speed blows it away and i was just wondering what are the best first mods i can do to it to gain alot more power, cause the V8 in my book should be heaps faster than the inline 6 and is it worth doing a t5 conversion or are the auto's pritty good on the V8 cause after i did the convertion to EB it was so much faster you would think it was another car. Any help would be great.Thank you.

The V8 and 6cyl both have similar power levels so a 5 speed 6cyl should be able to take an auto V8. Couple of easy things to do, get a shift kit in the auto (electronic or adjustable S5 solenoid) and get a set of decent extractors and exhaust system and you will be quite easily ahead of the 6cyl IMO. Underdrives are another quick, cheap and easy mod for the V8's and do give you a fair power increase too. After that, mods start to get expensive.

Extractors and exhaust make a considerable difference, head porting is a must do and a decent cam to achieve any real change and can be done easily enough at home, Im interested to know if you go the 5 speed what difference it makes.
EB was always a hard one to catch. Good luck

Re: exracting power from efi 302

I recently did a T5 conversion to an EB XR8. the difference was amazing!! that sucker had serious mumbo...esp over 2400rpm!.
the only fault i found was it would hunt at idle....any suggestions on that would be appreciated.

This is a misconception. On a dyno they only free up about 5 more HP at street driven RPM's, a few more if you have a really hot built engine. They were created to turn your water pump and alternator at regular speeds on a high RPM race engine. The freed up HP is an ancillary benefit and negligible.

As mentioned head work and a cam will give your biggest imtprovement.
