Which Head

Im doing an upgrade of my EB XR8. At the moment it has Herrod extractors & exhaust, GT snorkle and panel filter.

I am have a limited budget of around $5,000 and will be doing the install work myself and can get gaskets, head bolts etc for free so all im looking at is the cost of the parts.

I am looking at using a GT-40 intake manifold (ported), 70mm T/B & MAF, YT 1.72 RR, 24lb injectors, and if any money left over a Crane 2031 cam.

Now I can get a second hand set of GT-40P heads for 1000 or a set of GT-40Y heads for 1800. It it better to get the Ps and fit larger valves and get it proted with the saved money or just get the Ys?

Any ideas on the planned setup etc??

Im not looking for a all out strip weapon just a nice street car that can beat my mates VS 215i HSV and VT SS LS1. Probably between 240kw and 260kw is that expectable for the setup?

You'd be close to affording a blower with 5g

Re: Which Head

save the money and get the y's... also make sure the yt rollers fit the y heads, if they have screw in studs then you will have to get different rollers...

Re: Which Head

I cant get the blower for insurance reasons.

Looks like i will get the Ys...and maybe get them ported aswell. If i could get together some more money would edelbrock heads and intake(both standard) be that much better than the Ys and GT-40 intake(both ported)?

Re: Which Head

Damn Insurance Co.!!! Spoil all the fun...but mine seem to be quite alright with me picking bits of the other fords.

Though they will still want a higher premium, so i might not use the crane cam either. We shall have to see...might use the 220kw XR8 cam instead.

Re: Which Head

That 220 cam would be pretty small as they came with 1.7 rockers from factory. From what i've heard they're not a very good cam at all.

Re: Which Head

Okay so its GT-40 intake(ported), GT-40Y heads(ported), 70mm T/B & MAF, 1.72 RR and std. cam.

These are the spring specs that will come from the head:
Single. 1.006 ID. 1.500 OD. Closed loads 110 lbs @ 1.820. Open loads 240 lbs @ 1.400.
Are they good enough or will i need new ones? I guess maybe not cause they are single but any ideas.

Another question will the 19lb injectors cope or will i need to upgrade to 24lb for certain?

Any opinions on the setup? Performance numbers? Improvements?

Re: Which Head

I can't see why this setup wouldn't make 170-200rwkw, which will be enough to beat your mates VS, and should beat the LS1 as well, and as an extra bonus, it will sound about a million times better than the LS1 as well.

I'm also fairly sure you will need new injectors, as I believe the 19lbs run out at about 220-230 fwkw.

How much are you paying for the GT-40 manifold, and is it the one with tubular runners?
