Help! 289 running rough in gear - Ford Forums - Mustang Forum, Ford Trucks, Ford Focus and Ford Cars

Hi All,
I am a novice mechanic so any help would be much appreciated. I have a 66 Galaxie with a 289 running on LPG and Premium Unleaded. She was dyno-tuned about 2 months ago and was running purrrfectly on both fuels. About a month ago i took her to the trimmers to get some interior work done while i was in the US. Since i picked her up last friday i have been running on LPG until last night.....the LPG ran out and i switched over to petrol and then had problems - lots of spluttering and surging and stalling until the final stall and i couldn't get her started - ok must have run out of petrol (gauge dont work). Called the RAA - 2 hours later guy arrives, puts some fuel in the tank and the carby and broom - she starts, idles beautifully and revs through the range - nice - until about a hundred metres down the road she starts surging and stalling again, so i pull into a servo and fill up - only to get petrol spraying all over me after 30 seconds - the tank was almost full! So i filled up on gas, switched over and idles and drives fine on gas - but when on petrol, idles and revs fine in park/neutral, but when in gear does not want run - is this a vacuum problem? somebody please help!

You obviously have needle and seat issues in your carb ??..Plus you may have picked up some crap from your tank if fuel has been low ?..Check fuel filters and clean carb, maybe replace needle and seat. Though it could be that some gank has played havok with valves in pump also..Check that fuel tank breather works also....If you have run gas for long periods? Petrol may have gone off in carb also... I'd pull top off carb and check ?? Then work my way to tank....
